Many CIFAR researchers have provided surprising and entertaining arguments related to what they think is the Next Big Question. At the Next Big Question event in 2011, three CIFAR researchers – Alex Haslam, Clyde Hertzman, and Irene Bloemraad – shared their perspectives on the nature of identity.

Their objective was to answer to the question, “Who Are You?”

Social Psychologist Alex Haslam, a Fellow in our Social Interactions Identity and Well-Being program, argued that we are the groups that we belong to.

Epidemiologist Clyde Hertzman is a Fellow in our Successful Societies program and our Experience-based Brain & Biological Development program, and he believes that we are what our genes experience.

Irene Bloemraad is a Scholar in our Social Interactions Identity and Well-Being program, and she studies identity, citizenship and immigration. She argued that we are our citizenship.
