Giulio Chiribella

Giulio Chiribella is a quantum physicist who investigates how the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics can be turned into working principles for future information technologies.

He has done research on ultimate quantum limits, the precision of clocks and gyroscopes, the replication of information at the microscopic scale, and the design of quantum machines capable of learning from examples. In his search for simple physical principles that can explain the counterintuitive laws of quantum physics in a unified way, Chiribella has shown that quantum theory can be completely reconstructed from principles about information processing.

Chiribella’s research is part of a larger program aimed at understanding the fundamental laws of nature in the light of information science. In this broad perspective, he is studying the foundations of thermodynamics and exploring how quantum mechanics impacts our notion of cause and effect, leading to the possibility of exotic scenarios where even time and causal order are subject to quantum uncertainty.
