About

Joshua Shepherd’s research concerns the psychological capacities that give rise to intelligent thought and skilled action.

It also concerns the kinds of conscious experiences that are associated with intelligent thought and action, and the ways these experiences enable conscious control.

In this research, Shepherd seeks to integrate insights from philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience in order to develop accounts of the nature and mechanistic underpinnings of experiences of acting, in order to develop models of aspects of action control, and in order to apply these accounts to pressing societal issues concerning free will, moral responsibility, and the value of consciousness.
