Ce nouveau radiot\u00e9lescope ouvrira l\u2019Univers \u00e0 une nouvelle dimension d\u2019\u00e9tude scientifique gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des contributions cl\u00e9s de chercheurs de l\u2019ICRA.<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chime-experiment.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L\u2019exp\u00e9rience canadienne de cartographie de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne<\/a>\u00a0(Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, CHIME) est un radiot\u00e9lescope compos\u00e9 de r\u00e9flecteurs en \u00ab\u00a0demi-cylindre\u00a0\u00bb coupl\u00e9s \u00e0 un r\u00e9seau de r\u00e9cepteurs radio le long du centre de chaque demi-cylindre. Contrairement \u00e0 d\u2019autres radiot\u00e9lescopes, il n\u2019a pas d\u2019antenne parabolique ni de pi\u00e8ces mobiles. Chaque jour, CHIME sondera plus de la moiti\u00e9 du ciel au fil de la rotation de la Terre. CHIME capte des radiofr\u00e9quences qui permettront aux scientifiques de cartographier l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne dans l\u2019Univers et de cr\u00e9er une carte tridimensionnelle du plus grand volume d\u2019espace jamais relev\u00e9. Nous pourrons ainsi mieux comprendre l\u2019histoire de l\u2019Univers et la nature des \u00e9toiles lointaines, et \u00e9tudier avec une plus grande facilit\u00e9 les ondes gravitationnelles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Gr\u00e2ce au t\u00e9lescope CHIME, nous mesurerons l\u2019expansion de l\u2019Univers et nous pr\u00e9voyons approfondir notre compr\u00e9hension de la myst\u00e9rieuse \u00e9nergie sombre qui acc\u00e9l\u00e8re sans cesse cette expansion. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un domaine fondamental de la physique que nous ne comprenons pas, c\u2019est un grand myst\u00e8re. Nous souhaitons mieux comprendre la cr\u00e9ation et le destin de l\u2019Univers\u00a0\u00bb, dit\u00a0Mark Halpern, Boursier principal du programme Extr\u00eame univers et gravit\u00e9 et chercheur principal de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience CHIME.<\/p>\n<p>CHIME est une collaboration canadienne \u00e0 laquelle participent un grand nombre de boursiers du programme Extr\u00eame univers et gravit\u00e9 de l\u2019ICRA (anciennement le programme Cosmologie et gravit\u00e9). CHIME r\u00e9unit des scientifiques de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique, de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto, de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill et de l\u2019Observatoire f\u00e9d\u00e9ral d\u2019astrophysique o\u00f9 le t\u00e9lescope a \u00e9t\u00e9 construit. Des chercheurs affili\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019ICRA ont contribu\u00e9 au d\u00e9veloppement de CHIME depuis sa conception singuli\u00e8re jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la technique de cartographie de l\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne sous-jacente. Parmi les membres cl\u00e9s de la collaboration scientifique, notons\u00a0: Mark Halpern (Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique), l\u2019ancien Chercheur mondial ICRA-Azrieli\u00a0Keith Vanderlinde\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 de Toronto) et les Boursiers principaux\u00a0J. Richard Bond\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 de Toronto),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icra.ca\/profiles\/matt-dobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mat<\/a>t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icra.ca\/profiles\/matt-dobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Dobbs<\/a>\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 McGill),\u00a0Gary Hinshaw\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique) et\u00a0Ue-Li Pen\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 de Toronto).<\/p>\n<p>En plus de cartographier l\u2019Univers, CHIME capte une gamme de fr\u00e9quences qui se r\u00e9v\u00e8le id\u00e9ale pour l\u2019\u00e9tude des sursauts radio rapides et des pulsars radio.\u00a0Victoria Kaspi\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 McGill), directrice du programme Extr\u00eame univers et gravit\u00e9 de l\u2019ICRA et boursi\u00e8re de la Fondation R. Howard Webster, est chercheuse principale du volet CHIME d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tude de signaux radio transitoires avec les Boursiers principaux\u00a0Ingrid Stairs\u00a0(Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique) et\u00a0Scott Ransom\u00a0(National Radio Astronomy Observatory).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/chime-photo.jpg\" alt=\"CHIME-photo\" data-displaymode=\"Original\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lors du d\u00e9veloppement de CHIME, des chercheurs de l\u2019ICRA se sont rendu compte qu\u2019en apportant seulement une toute petite modification \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9lectronique, le t\u00e9lescope pourrait simultan\u00e9ment mesurer les sursauts radio rapides.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la conception singuli\u00e8re de CHIME, nous pourrons nous attaquer \u00e0 l\u2019un des nouveaux domaines les plus \u00e9nigmatiques de l\u2019astrophysique \u2013 les sursauts radio rapides. L\u2019origine de ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements extragalactiques bizarres est un myst\u00e8re. Depuis leur d\u00e9couverte, il y a dix ans, les chercheurs en ont seulement d\u00e9tect\u00e9 deux douzaines. CHIME va probablement d\u00e9tecter un grand nombre de ces objets chaque jour et produire une mine de donn\u00e9es qui positionneront le Canada \u00e0 l\u2019avant-garde de ces recherches\u00a0\u00bb, dit Kaspi.<\/p>\n<p>Les sursauts radio rapides ne durent que quelques millisecondes, mais sont beaucoup plus brillants et puissants que tout autre \u00e9clair court connu, comme les impulsions des pulsars radio, une forme d\u2019\u00e9toile \u00e0 neutrons. En raison de leur nature br\u00e8ve et de contraintes technologiques, leur d\u00e9tection s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e ardue.<\/p>\n<p>La Fondation canadienne pour l\u2019innovation et les gouvernements de la Colombie-Britannique, de l\u2019Ontario et du Qu\u00e9bec ont financ\u00e9 CHIME pour un total de 16\u00a0millions de dollars.
