Les astronomes ne savent pas vraiment ce qui a caus&eacute; le sursaut radio rapide d&eacute;tect&eacute; le 25&nbsp;juillet dernier par le radiot&eacute;lescope CHIME, pr&egrave;s de Penticton, en Colombie-Britannique. Mais ils sont confiants que CHIME d&eacute;tient les capacit&eacute;s n&eacute;cessaires pour d&eacute;tecter ces myst&eacute;rieux sursauts transitoires qui peuvent nous r&eacute;v&eacute;ler bien des choses sur ce qui arrive dans des galaxies tr&egrave;s loin de la n&ocirc;tre. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Les sursauts radio rapides (Fast Radio Bursts, FRB) ne durent que quelques milli&egrave;mes de seconde, mais on dit qu&rsquo;ils lib&egrave;rent l&rsquo;&eacute;nergie de 500&nbsp;millions d&rsquo;&eacute;toiles. Le premier a &eacute;t&eacute; d&eacute;couvert en Australie, il y a onze ans. Depuis, pr&egrave;s de trois douzaines de sursauts ont &eacute;t&eacute; enregistr&eacute;s dans des laboratoires de par le monde. Le sursaut enregistr&eacute; par CHIME a la plus basse fr&eacute;quence &agrave; ce jour.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">CHIME veut dire Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (Exp&eacute;rience canadienne de cartographie de l&rsquo;intensit&eacute; de l&rsquo;hydrog&egrave;ne); comme son nom l&rsquo;indique, le t&eacute;lescope n&rsquo;a pas d&rsquo;abord &eacute;t&eacute; con&ccedil;u pour la d&eacute;tection des FRB. La t&acirc;che premi&egrave;re de CHIME &eacute;tait de sonder plus de la moiti&eacute; du ciel au fil de la rotation de la Terre sur son axe pour aider les astronomes &agrave; cr&eacute;er la carte tridimensionnelle du plus grand volume de l&rsquo;espace jamais sond&eacute;. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Toutefois, pendant sa construction, des astrophysiciens se sont rendu compte que CHIME pourrait aussi tr&egrave;s bien se pr&ecirc;ter &agrave; l&rsquo;enregistrement de FRB de basse fr&eacute;quence. Pour ce faire, ils ont donc pr&eacute;vu l&rsquo;installation d&rsquo;une antenne sp&eacute;ciale. &laquo;&nbsp;Certains disaient que CHIME ne serait pas capable de d&eacute;tecter ces FRB particuliers, car &agrave; faible fr&eacute;quence, le signal dispara&icirc;t. Maintenant, nous savons que c&rsquo;est possible&nbsp;&raquo;, a dit <a href=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/fr\/biographie\/victoria-kaspi\/\" >Victoria Kaspi<\/a>&nbsp;(Universit&eacute; McGill), directrice du programme <a href=\"[f669d9a7-009d-4d83-ddaa-000000000002]026e4a4f-0ed3-46c2-a187-77f348ef8746\" >Extr&ecirc;me univers et gravit&eacute; du CIFAR<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">La structure singuli&egrave;re du t&eacute;lescope est ce qui lui conf&egrave;re sa polyvalence, dit <a href=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/fr\/biographie\/gary-hinshaw\/\" >Gary Hinshaw<\/a>, cosmologue de l&rsquo;Universit&eacute; de la Colombie-Britannique, Boursier principal du CIFAR et membre de l&rsquo;&eacute;quipe CHIME. Sans pi&egrave;ces mobiles, ni antennes paraboliques, CHIME rappelle les demi-cylindres d&rsquo;un parc de planche &agrave; neige de la Colombie-Britannique. &laquo;&nbsp;Cette forme nous permet d&rsquo;avoir une empreinte immense dans le ciel et, en cons&eacute;quence, d&rsquo;observer ces sursauts&nbsp;&raquo;, dit Hinshaw. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Une fois pleinement op&eacute;rationnel &ndash; ce qui pourrait prendre un ou deux ans &ndash;, CHIME pourrait bien d&eacute;tecter jusqu&rsquo;&agrave; deux douzaines de FRB par jour. Kaspi pr&eacute;cise toutefois qu&rsquo;il y a encore beaucoup d&rsquo;incertitude quant au taux d&rsquo;observation, &laquo;&nbsp;mais &ccedil;a n&rsquo;est certainement pas z&eacute;ro, et voil&agrave; pourquoi nous sommes tr&egrave;s emball&eacute;s&nbsp;&raquo;, dit-elle. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">En ce qui concerne l&rsquo;origine des FRB, les astronomes se plaisent &agrave; dire &agrave; la blague qu&rsquo;il existe plus de th&eacute;ories que de causes possibles. Il n&rsquo;y a qu&rsquo;un FRB qui s&rsquo;est r&eacute;p&eacute;t&eacute; et Kaspi faisait partie de l&rsquo;&eacute;quipe qu&rsquo;il l&rsquo;a d&eacute;couvert en 2012. Cette r&eacute;p&eacute;tition offre des indices sur son origine. Selon Kaspi, &laquo;&nbsp;nous savons maintenant que si un sursaut se r&eacute;p&egrave;te, il n&rsquo;a pas pour origine la collision de deux &eacute;toiles &agrave; neutrons&nbsp;&raquo;. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">N&eacute;anmoins, la collision d&rsquo;&eacute;toiles pourrait causer des FRB &ndash; mais pas dans ce cas particulier. En fait, les FRB pourraient &eacute;maner de nombreux &eacute;v&eacute;nements diff&eacute;rents qui surviennent &agrave; travers toute l&rsquo;&eacute;tendue violente et tumultueuse de l&rsquo;Univers. Toutefois, il y a une th&eacute;orie tr&egrave;s populaire que Kaspi &eacute;carte compl&egrave;tement&nbsp;: l&rsquo;intelligence extraterrestre. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&laquo;&nbsp;C&rsquo;est impossible&nbsp;&raquo;, dit-elle avec emphase. &laquo;&nbsp;Comment une civilisation pourrait-elle communiquer avec une autre &ndash; qui par hasard dispose de la m&ecirc;me technologie &ndash; dans une r&eacute;gion compl&egrave;tement diff&eacute;rente de l&rsquo;Univers?&nbsp;&raquo; <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Toutefois, sur Terre, les communications entre les astronomes situ&eacute;s dans diverses r&eacute;gions du monde n&rsquo;ont jamais &eacute;t&eacute; meilleures. Nous sommes &agrave; l&rsquo;&egrave;re de l&rsquo;astronomie &agrave; multiples messagers o&ugrave; les donn&eacute;es peuvent provenir d&rsquo;une vari&eacute;t&eacute; de sources. Les donn&eacute;es sur les ondes gravitationnelles, les neutrinos, les sursauts radio rapides et d&rsquo;autres ph&eacute;nom&egrave;nes approfondissent notre compr&eacute;hension de l&rsquo;Univers. Maintenant, dit Kaspi, &laquo;&nbsp;nous pourrions d&eacute;tecter un sursaut radio rapide en m&ecirc;me temps qu&rsquo;une onde gravitationnelle, ce qui serait tout simplement spectaculaire&nbsp;&raquo;.<\/p>\n<p>Le CIFAR a jou&eacute; un r&ocirc;le important dans la formation de CHIME et nous sommes remplis de gratitude et d&rsquo;emballement.
