Aujourd\u2019hui, les astronomes ont d\u00e9tect\u00e9 des milliers d\u2019exoplan\u00e8tes, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire des plan\u00e8tes en orbite autour d\u2019autres \u00e9toiles que le Soleil. L\u2019une d\u2019entre elles, K2-18b, a fait la manchette dans le monde entier en septembre 2019, car il s\u2019agissait de la premi\u00e8re exoplan\u00e8te, situ\u00e9e dans la zone habitable de son \u00e9toile, dont l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re contenait des vapeurs d\u2019eau.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cette d\u00e9couverte est r\u00e9volutionnaire, car la pr\u00e9sence d\u2019eau sur K2-18b signifie qu\u2019elle pourrait avoir des caract\u00e9ristiques similaires \u00e0 celles de la Terre et pourrait nous aider \u00e0 comprendre notre propre plan\u00e8te. Il y a une autre raison pour laquelle cette plan\u00e8te est sp\u00e9ciale : elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couverte avec l\u2019aide d\u2019une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs interdisciplinaires qui ont reconnu la relation entre l\u2019inf\u00e9rence causale et les m\u00e9thodes n\u00e9cessaires pour d\u00e9couvrir la plan\u00e8te.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf, boursier du programme\u00a0<span style=\"color: #da291c;\"><a class=\"color-red\" style=\"color: #da291c;\" href=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/fr\/recherche\/programme\/apprentissage-automatique-apprentissage-biologique\">Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique<\/a><\/span>\u00a0du CIFAR et directeur de l\u2019Institut Max-Planck sur les syst\u00e8mes intelligents, a cod\u00e9velopp\u00e9 l\u2019approche d\u2019apprentissage automatique permettant d\u2019identifier des exoplan\u00e8tes comme K2-18b.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dans le pass\u00e9, la chasse aux exoplan\u00e8tes a grandement profit\u00e9 du t\u00e9lescope spatial Kepler de la NASA, un instrument qui permet aux scientifiques d\u2019observer les variations d\u2019intensit\u00e9 lumineuse lorsqu\u2019une exoplan\u00e8te passe devant son \u00e9toile \u00e0 chaque orbite. Cependant, comme les plan\u00e8tes sont beaucoup plus petites que les \u00e9toiles, ces variations sont infimes. De plus, les signaux physiques enregistr\u00e9s par des t\u00e9lescopes comme Kepler contiennent une quantit\u00e9 consid\u00e9rable de bruit ind\u00e9sirable. Cela rend les exoplan\u00e8tes extr\u00eamement difficiles \u00e0 d\u00e9tecter, explique Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">En 2013, en collaboration avec l\u2019astronome David Hogg et le physicien Dan Foreman-Mackey, le chercheur a voulu d\u00e9terminer s\u2019il \u00e9tait possible de rep\u00e9rer des exoplan\u00e8tes gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019apprentissage automatique en se servant des donn\u00e9es fournies par Kepler. Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf et ses collaborateurs ont utilis\u00e9 l\u2019apprentissage automatique pour reconstruire le v\u00e9ritable signal d\u2019une \u00e9toile \u00e0 partir des donn\u00e9es d\u2019autres \u00e9toiles. En s\u2019appuyant sur de vastes ensembles de donn\u00e9es recueillies par Kepler sur plus de 100 000 \u00e9toiles, ils ont pu entra\u00eener de puissants algorithmes d\u2019apprentissage automatique pour \u00e9liminer les erreurs syst\u00e9matiques produites par l\u2019instrument.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00ab\u00a0Nous avons remarqu\u00e9 des points communs dans la lumi\u00e8re \u00e9mise par diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9toiles, de sorte que deux \u00e9toiles diff\u00e9rentes qui sont \u00e0 des ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re l\u2019une de l\u2019autre peuvent devenir plus sombres ou plus lumineuses en m\u00eame temps, dit Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf. Lorsque cela se produit, c\u2019est un indice que l\u2019instrument est la cause de ces signaux, et non les \u00e9toiles.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">L\u2019\u00e9limination du bruit dans les donn\u00e9es fournies par le t\u00e9lescope Kepler est devenue particuli\u00e8rement importante en 2013 lors de la d\u00e9faillance des roues de r\u00e9action qui orientent l\u2019instrument. La NASA a gard\u00e9 le t\u00e9lescope en fonction en tirant parti de la pression de rayonnement du soleil et du carburant restant pour maintenir la stabilit\u00e9 du t\u00e9lescope, dans le cadre d\u2019une\u00a0<span style=\"color: #da291c;\"><a class=\"color-red\" style=\"color: #da291c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/kepler\/a-sunny-outlook-for-nasa-keplers-second-light\">mission baptis\u00e9e K2<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">En 2015, Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf et son \u00e9quipe ont appliqu\u00e9 leurs m\u00e9thodes d\u2019entra\u00eenement aux donn\u00e9es fournies par K2 et ont rep\u00e9r\u00e9 36\u00a0exoplan\u00e8tes possibles. Plus de la moiti\u00e9 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 ensuite confirm\u00e9es par d\u2019autres t\u00e9lescopes. Parmi celles-ci, K2-18b, une plan\u00e8te situ\u00e9e \u00e0 124\u00a0ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re de la Terre.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"cust-small-title\" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"heading-small\">Utiliser l\u2019IA pour mieux comprendre le monde<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">La d\u00e9couverte de la vapeur d\u2019eau dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re de K2-18b est survenue la m\u00eame semaine que la remise du prix K\u00f6rber 2019 \u00e0 Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf pour ses contributions dans le domaine de l\u2019apprentissage automatique. Il a re\u00e7u un million d\u2019euros pour ses travaux sur les m\u00e9thodes fond\u00e9es sur l\u2019utilisation de noyaux, qu\u2019il d\u00e9finit comme une \u00ab\u00a0forme math\u00e9matiquement \u00e9l\u00e9gante d\u2019apprentissage automatique qui peut \u00eatre appliqu\u00e9e aux donn\u00e9es structur\u00e9es et aux d\u00e9pendances non lin\u00e9aires\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00ab\u00a0C\u2019\u00e9tait une bonne semaine, admet-il. Alors que je me pr\u00e9parais pour la remise des prix, David Hogg m\u2019a envoy\u00e9 un courriel pour m\u2019informer qu\u2019une des plan\u00e8tes que nous avions d\u00e9couvertes il y a quelques ann\u00e9es avait fait les manchettes. C\u2019\u00e9tait gratifiant de d\u00e9couvrir quelque chose de nouveau dans l\u2019Univers. Mes recherches portent sur la compr\u00e9hension des r\u00e9gularit\u00e9s dans le monde. C\u2019est la base de la science, mais cela implique aussi l\u2019intelligence, ce qui nous permet de faire des pr\u00e9visions.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">En f\u00e9vrier 2020, Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf a \u00e9t\u00e9 avis\u00e9 qu\u2019il allait recevoir le\u00a0<span style=\"color: #da291c;\"><a class=\"color-red\" style=\"color: #da291c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbbva.es\/en\/noticias\/the-bbva-foundation-recognizes-isabelle-guyon-bernhard-scholkopf-and-vladimir-vapnik-for-work-that-has-advanced-the-field-of-artificial-intelligence-by-teaching-machines-the-human-skill-of-classifyin\/\">prix Fronti\u00e8res de la connaissance de la Fondation BBVA dans la cat\u00e9gorie Technologies de l\u2019information et de la communication<\/a><\/span>\u00a0en juin 2020. Ce prix est assorti d\u2019une somme de 400 000 euros.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Avec ses coll\u00e8gues du programme Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique du CIFAR, Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf travaille actuellement sur des algorithmes robustes reposant sur des d\u00e9pendances causales qui permettent aux machines de s\u2019adapter \u00e0 de nouveaux environnements.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 mesure que les scientifiques recueillent de plus en plus de donn\u00e9es et que la recherche sur l\u2019apprentissage automatique et l\u2019IA progresse, la possibilit\u00e9 que ces nouvelles m\u00e9thodes contribuent \u00e0 des avanc\u00e9es scientifiques importantes augmente\u00a0\u00bb, d\u00e9clare Yoshua Bengio, codirecteur du programme Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique du CIFAR et titulaire d\u2019une chaire en IA Canada-CIFAR (Mila et Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al). \u00ab\u00a0Je suis ravi de cette perc\u00e9e majeure, due en partie \u00e0 mon ami et collaborateur Bernhard Sch\u00f6lkopf, un pilier du programme Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique du CIFAR qui a r\u00e9cemment re\u00e7u des prix importants pour ses contributions exceptionnelles dans notre domaine.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"cust-small-title\" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"heading-small\">Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Le programme Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique du CIFAR a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le majeur dans la r\u00e9volution de l\u2019IA en examinant comment les r\u00e9seaux neuronaux artificiels pouvaient s\u2019inspirer du cerveau humain et en mettant au point une technique puissante\u00a0: l\u2019apprentissage profond.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Aujourd\u2019hui, le programme \u00e9largit notre compr\u00e9hension des principes informatiques et math\u00e9matiques fondamentaux qui d\u00e9veloppent l\u2019intelligence par l\u2019apprentissage, que ce soit dans les cerveaux ou dans les machines.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Les syst\u00e8mes d\u2019IA actuels ont une compr\u00e9hension limit\u00e9e du monde qui nous entoure. Le programme Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique du CIFAR s\u2019attaque \u00e0 ces limites en revisitant les questions fondamentales plut\u00f4t qu\u2019en se concentrant sur les progr\u00e8s technologiques \u00e0 court terme.
