Certains ouvriront m\u00eame la voie \u00e0 des innovations et \u00e0 des perc\u00e9es d\u00e9cisives pour le monde de\u00a0demain.\n<strong>Sarath Chandar<\/strong>, titulaire d&rsquo;une chaire en IA Canada-CIFAR, est un ancien \u00e9tudiant de l&rsquo;\u00c9cole d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 APAR. Il est aujourd&rsquo;hui membre acad\u00e9mique principal de Mila, l&rsquo;Institut qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois d&rsquo;intelligence artificielle, et professeur adjoint \u00e0 Polytechnique Montr\u00e9al. Il met au point des syst\u00e8mes d&rsquo;apprentissage continu qui permettent aux machines d&rsquo;apprendre au-del\u00e0 de l&rsquo;algorithme utilis\u00e9 lors de leur d\u00e9ploiement. Ses recherches ont des retomb\u00e9es majeures pour tous les syst\u00e8mes d&rsquo;apprentissage automatique d\u00e9j\u00e0 en place, tels que les assistants personnels num\u00e9riques, les voitures sans conducteur et m\u00eame les applications m\u00e9dicales, comme celles qui permettent de d\u00e9pister le cancer \u00e0 partir de donn\u00e9es d&rsquo;imagerie.\nLes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations actuelles de syst\u00e8mes d&rsquo;apprentissage automatique comportent cependant une lacune majeure : une fois form\u00e9es et d\u00e9ploy\u00e9es dans un cadre donn\u00e9, elles sont incapables de poursuivre leur apprentissage comme le font les humains.\n\u00ab Certains syst\u00e8mes deviennent vite obsol\u00e8tes et doivent \u00eatre r\u00e9vis\u00e9s toutes les quelques semaines, explique Sarath Chandar. Et chaque fois qu&rsquo;il faut r\u00e9viser un syst\u00e8me, cela exige \u00e9norm\u00e9ment de ressources informatiques, de temps et de donn\u00e9es.\u00a0\u00bb\nOr, rendre les syst\u00e8mes plus performants gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l&rsquo;apprentissage continu pourrait bien s&rsquo;av\u00e9rer d&rsquo;une importance salutaire. Par exemple, les voitures sans conducteur pourraient s&rsquo;adapter \u00e0 de nouvelles situations telles que des conditions m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques d\u00e9favorables ou de nouveaux itin\u00e9raires qu&rsquo;elles ignorent. Du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l&rsquo;imagerie m\u00e9dicale, la machine pourrait d\u00e9tecter des anomalies pour lesquelles elle n&rsquo;a pas encore \u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0form\u00e9e.\n\u00ab L&rsquo;apprentissage continu est l&rsquo;une des grandes promesses de l&rsquo;IA, mais il y a encore plusieurs probl\u00e8mes fondamentaux \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre avant d&rsquo;aboutir \u00e0 un syst\u00e8me d&rsquo;apprentissage continu parfait \u00bb, admet Sarath Chandar. Son laboratoire travaille \u00e0 la fois sur la recherche fondamentale et les applications de l&rsquo;apprentissage continu dans les domaines de la vision artificielle et du traitement automatique des\u00a0langues.\nAvant de devenir titulaire d&rsquo;une chaire et chercheur reconnu en apprentissage automatique, Sarath Chandar a pris part \u00e0 deux \u00c9coles d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 &#8211; la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al en tant qu&rsquo;\u00e9tudiant au doctorat \u00e0 l&rsquo;Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al, o\u00f9 il a \u00e9t\u00e9 encadr\u00e9 par les pionniers de l&rsquo;apprentissage profond Yoshua Bengio et Hugo Larochelle. Ces derniers sont tous deux boursiers du programme <em>Apprentissage automatique, apprentissage biologique<\/em> du CIFAR et titulaires d&rsquo;une chaire en IA Canada-CIFAR.\nEn 2019, Sarath Chandar a fr\u00e9quent\u00e9 la deuxi\u00e8me \u00c9cole d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 d&rsquo;Edmonton imm\u00e9diatement apr\u00e8s avoir accept\u00e9 son premier poste de professeur. Il y a rencontr\u00e9 un grand nombre de futurs coll\u00e8gues et recrut\u00e9 des \u00e9tudiants de l&rsquo;\u00c9cole pour compl\u00e9ter son \u00e9quipe de chercheurs.\n\u00ab Je n&rsquo;ai pas manqu\u00e9 une seule conf\u00e9rence lors de ces deux \u00c9coles d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9 APAR, affirme-t-il. \u00c0 mon avis, l&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat est de pouvoir rencontrer des gens aux parcours diff\u00e9rents et de voir comment ils appliquent l&rsquo;apprentissage automatique \u00e0 leurs recherches, mais aussi de b\u00e9n\u00e9ficier d&rsquo;un cours acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 sur des sujets qu&rsquo;on ma\u00eetrise peut-\u00eatre moins.
