Pour garantir notre s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et notre survie, il est essentiel de les pr\u00e9voir avant qu\u2019ils ne se produisent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/fr\/biographie\/samira-ebrahimi-kahou\/\">Samira Kahou<\/a>, titulaire de chaire en IA Canada-CIFAR, met \u00e0 profit l\u2019intelligence artificielle pour d\u00e9tecter et pr\u00e9voir les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques extr\u00eames afin de faciliter la gestion des catastrophes et de sensibiliser les gens \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d\u00e9vastatrice de la crise climatique.<\/p>\n<h3>Pr\u00e9voir et pr\u00e9venir les feux de for\u00eat et les ouragans<\/h3>\n<p>Selon <button class=\"pdf-btn-link cifar_btn_link\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.fed.us\/pnw\/pubs\/pnw_gtr870\/pnw_gtr870.pdf\" data-target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">le minist\u00e8re am\u00e9ricain de l\u2019Agriculture<\/button>, l\u2019augmentation de la temp\u00e9rature d\u2019un seul degr\u00e9 par an peut avoir un impact consid\u00e9rable sur le nombre de feux de for\u00eat et leur intensit\u00e9. Kahou est en train de concevoir un algorithme d\u2019apprentissage par renforcement profond multimodal et semi-supervis\u00e9, un mode d\u2019apprentissage automatique qui s\u2019appuie sur des donn\u00e9es non \u00e9tiquet\u00e9es, pour d\u00e9tecter et pr\u00e9voir les feux de for\u00eat en Am\u00e9rique du Nord.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab L\u2019objectif est de pr\u00e9voir quelles r\u00e9gions sont les plus \u00e0 risque afin de pouvoir avertir les familles de l\u2019imminence d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nements tels que les feux de for\u00eat et les ouragans \u00bb, explique Kahou, membre du corps professoral de Mila, professeure agr\u00e9g\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9cole de technologie sup\u00e9rieure (\u00c9TS) <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">et professeure auxiliaire \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Elle travaille avec diff\u00e9rentes sources de donn\u00e9es, notamment des images satellitaires et des donn\u00e9es m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques. Une fois que l\u2019agent d\u2019apprentissage automatique pourra reconna\u00eetre et identifier les formes qui repr\u00e9sentent des feux de for\u00eat sur une p\u00e9riode donn\u00e9e, Kahou utilisera des donn\u00e9es temporelles pour pr\u00e9voir les r\u00e9gions \u00e0 risque de feu de for\u00eat.<\/p>\n<h3>Pr\u00e9venir les attaques d\u2019essaims de criquets en Afrique<\/h3>\n<p>La hausse des temp\u00e9ratures entra\u00eene aussi une augmentation du nombre de cyclones \u2014 des syst\u00e8mes m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques extr\u00eames \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle qui font tourbillonner le vent vers l\u2019int\u00e9rieur. Les cyclones renferment un pourcentage \u00e9lev\u00e9 d\u2019humidit\u00e9, ce qui stimule les hormones des criquets. Ceux-ci se regroupent alors par millions et parcourent plus de 50\u00a0kilom\u00e8tres par jour \u00e0 la recherche de nourriture. En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, ils attaquent les exploitations agricoles et d\u00e9vastent les r\u00e9coltes, pouvant d\u00e9vorer la nourriture de quelque 300\u00a0000\u00a0personnes, selon l\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/locusts\/fr\/\">Organisation des Nations unies pour l\u2019alimentation et l\u2019agriculture<\/a>. Les cyclones, fr\u00e9quents en Asie, en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient, sont responsables des attaques d\u2019essaims de criquets qui ravagent les exploitations agricoles et les r\u00e9serves alimentaires dans ces r\u00e9gions.<\/p>\n<p>La pr\u00e9vision des \u00e9v\u00e9nements futurs pourrait aider les communaut\u00e9s agricoles \u00e0 att\u00e9nuer les pertes et \u00e0 pr\u00e9venir l\u2019ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire.<\/p>\n<p>Kahou a r\u00e9cemment publi\u00e9 des recherches sur la pr\u00e9vision des essaims de criquets en Afrique du Nord, en Inde et au Moyen-Orient. Ces recherches ont des r\u00e9percussions non seulement sur la compr\u00e9hension et l\u2019\u00e9tude des effets des changements climatiques sur les criquets, mais aussi sur la gestion des catastrophes et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 alimentaire, en particulier dans les communaut\u00e9s vuln\u00e9rables.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019aide de donn\u00e9es sur les essaims de criquets et la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation provenant du <a href=\"https:\/\/locust-hub-hqfao.hub.arcgis.com\/\">Locust Hub de la FAO<\/a>, Kahou et ses collaborateurs ont mis au point une longue m\u00e9moire \u00e0 court terme, un type de r\u00e9seau neuronal r\u00e9current qui traite des s\u00e9quences de donn\u00e9es pour pr\u00e9voir la distribution r\u00e9gionale des essaims de criquets par la cr\u00e9ation d\u2019une s\u00e9rie chronologique. Le mod\u00e8le d\u2019apprentissage profond de l\u2019\u00e9quipe a permis de pr\u00e9voir les essaims de criquets avec une pr\u00e9cision de 65\u00a0%, un r\u00e9sultat prometteur malgr\u00e9 la raret\u00e9 des donn\u00e9es, mais que Kahou est d\u00e9termin\u00e9e \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Originaire du Moyen-Orient, j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin de l\u2019impact d\u00e9vastateur des attaques d\u2019essaims de criquets sur les communaut\u00e9s.
