Le volume qu\u2019ils ont calcul\u00e9 est plus grand que la quantit\u00e9 d\u2019eau que contiennent les calottes glaciaires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Nous nous sommes vite rendu compte qu\u2019en travaillant ensemble, nous pouvions apporter un regard nouveau sur une question importante : quelle quantit\u00e9 d\u2019eau souterraine la plan\u00e8te renferme-t-elle? \u00bb, explique <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/fr\/biographie\/barbara-sherwood-lollar\/\"><strong>Barbara Sherwood Lollar<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00e0 propos de la collaboration avec les membres du programme Terre 4D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Crust 1.0, une base de donn\u00e9es mondiale de toutes les roches constituant les couches sup\u00e9rieures de la cro\u00fbte terrestre, les chercheurs ont estim\u00e9 que pr\u00e8s de 44 millions de kilom\u00e8tres cubes d\u2019eau se trouvent entre deux et dix kilom\u00e8tres de profondeur. En comparaison, la quantit\u00e9 d\u2019eau pr\u00e9sente dans les calottes glaciaires de l\u2019Antarctique est estim\u00e9e \u00e0 27 millions de kilom\u00e8tres cubes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Les estimations ant\u00e9rieures de l\u2019eau souterraine ne concernaient que les parties de la cro\u00fbte terrestre situ\u00e9es dans les deux kilom\u00e8tres sup\u00e9rieurs. Il y a trois ans, Oliver Warr, associ\u00e9 de recherche dans le laboratoire de Sherwood Lollar, et les membres du programme Terre 4D ont formul\u00e9 l\u2019hypoth\u00e8se que l\u2019eau souterraine situ\u00e9e dans les profondeurs de la cro\u00fbte terrestre constituait un r\u00e9servoir largement sous-\u00e9tudi\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Ce nouvel article confirme la grande quantit\u00e9 d\u2019eau souterraine profonde estim\u00e9e pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment et fait \u00e9galement progresser le domaine en incluant non seulement les roches cristallines, mais aussi les roches s\u00e9dimentaires \u00bb, d\u00e9clare Sherwood Lollar, coauteure de l\u2019article, coresponsable du programme Terre 4D : Science et exploration du sous-sol du CIFAR et professeure \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leurs r\u00e9sultats ont \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9s r\u00e9cemment dans<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/19448007\"> <em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geophysical Research Letters<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab En se concentrant sur ce qui existe \u00e0 une profondeur de deux \u00e0 dix kilom\u00e8tres, les estimations pr\u00e9existantes concernant l\u2019eau souterraine \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale ont doubl\u00e9 \u00bb, ajoute Sherwood Lollar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cifar.ca\/fr\/biographie\/jennifer-mcintosh\/\"><strong>Jennifer McIntosh<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, membre du programme Terre 4D, explique que les r\u00e9sultats de l\u2019\u00e9quipe permettront \u00e9galement aux chercheurs de mieux comprendre les syst\u00e8mes d\u2019eau souterraine profonde et les d\u00e9fis que cela pourrait contribuer \u00e0 r\u00e9soudre \u00e0 la surface.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Les syst\u00e8mes d\u2019eau souterraine profonde repr\u00e9sentent encore une fronti\u00e8re scientifique \u2014 nous savons peu de choses sur la distribution, la qualit\u00e9 et l\u2019\u00e2ge de l\u2019eau au-del\u00e0 de deux kilom\u00e8tres, car nos fen\u00eatres sur le sous-sol, telles que les puits profonds, les trous de forage, les mines, se font rares \u00bb, explique McIntosh, professeure \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Arizona. \u00ab N\u00e9anmoins, gr\u00e2ce aux quelques endroits explor\u00e9s jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, nous savons que ces syst\u00e8mes d\u2019eau souterraine profonde abritent une vie microbienne et contiennent des \u00e9l\u00e9ments et des gaz importants pour notre \u00e9conomie carboneutre en pleine croissance. \u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cette
