En 2008, ISL Engineering and Land Services a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 une \u00e9valuation qui a montr\u00e9 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019un approvisionnement en eau potable plus important et plus durable pour servir la population et \u00e9liminer l\u2019avis d\u2019\u00e9bullition de l\u2019eau qui frappait souvent les r\u00e9sidents de la ville \u00e0 cause de la grande turbidit\u00e9 dans la rivi\u00e8re Saskatchewan Nord.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.draytonvalley.ca\/water-treatment-plant\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La recommandation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> de l\u2019entreprise a men\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019approbation du financement n\u00e9cessaire au d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019une installation de traitement de l\u2019eau \u00e0 la fine pointe de la technologie, dot\u00e9e de m\u00e9canismes de filtration sophistiqu\u00e9s et durables, d\u2019une capacit\u00e9 de traitement de 18 millions de litres par jour et de 2 800 m\u00b3 de stockage d\u2019eau potable suppl\u00e9mentaire pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la demande croissante de la population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Au c\u0153ur de cette collaboration entre le monde universitaire et l\u2019industrie se trouvent les m\u00e9canismes d\u2019entretien de la station de traitement de l\u2019eau pour veiller \u00e0 son bon fonctionnement, \u00e0 sa rentabilit\u00e9 et \u00e0 son efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Construction d\u2019une mini usine de traitement de l\u2019eau<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019\u00e9quipe de projet d\u2019ISL Adapt a construit une mini station de traitement de l\u2019eau avec un acc\u00e8s \u00e0 la m\u00eame source d\u2019eau pour r\u00e9aliser des exp\u00e9riences et recueillir des donn\u00e9es qui permettront \u00e0 un agent d\u2019apprentissage par renforcement (AR) de prendre des d\u00e9cisions en temps r\u00e9el, puis d\u2019entretenir et de nettoyer le syst\u00e8me, un processus tr\u00e8s \u00e9nergivore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le processus de traitement de l\u2019eau met en jeu deux grands syst\u00e8mes de r\u00e9servoirs de filtration qui \u00e9liminent les contaminants et qui doivent \u00eatre nettoy\u00e9s r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement. Ce nettoyage entra\u00eene la mise hors service temporaire d\u2019un filtre pendant que l\u2019autre continue de fonctionner. L\u2019\u00e9quipe de recherche exploite l\u2019apprentissage par renforcement, une forme d\u2019apprentissage automatique qui entra\u00eene des agents au moyen d\u2019un syst\u00e8me de r\u00e9compenses et d\u2019incitatifs, pour pr\u00e9dire la fr\u00e9quence du processus de nettoyage et rationaliser les services afin de minimiser les perturbations d\u2019approvisionnement en eau potable de la ville. \u00ab Pour r\u00e9aliser nos exp\u00e9riences, nous encrassons les filtres et nous d\u00e9terminons le nombre de capteurs n\u00e9cessaires pour suivre les changements op\u00e9rationnels en temps r\u00e9el. Voil\u00e0 le genre de donn\u00e9es industrielles en contexte r\u00e9el qu\u2019il nous faut pour concevoir des algorithmes efficaces dont la mise \u00e0 l\u2019essai serait impossible dans une v\u00e9ritable usine pour des raisons de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et de r\u00e9glementation \u00bb, explique White.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Du point de vue de l\u2019apprentissage automatique, l\u2019un des probl\u00e8mes fondamentaux concerne la surveillance de flux de donn\u00e9es (relev\u00e9s de turbidit\u00e9, pH, conductivit\u00e9, temp\u00e9rature et autres donn\u00e9es de capteurs), ainsi que leur conversion de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 ce que l\u2019agent d\u2019apprentissage par renforcement puisse prendre des d\u00e9cisions concernant le processus \u00bb, poursuit-il.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019\u00e9quipe a recours \u00e0 des m\u00e9thodes de gradient de politique, un type de technique d\u2019apprentissage par renforcement qui convient parfaitement aux situations n\u00e9cessitant une prise de d\u00e9cision continue, \u00e0 savoir la prise de mesures en pr\u00e9vision de r\u00e9compenses \u00e0 long terme. Cela permet \u00e0 l\u2019agent de s\u2019adapter aux types de situations qui pourraient survenir dans une v\u00e9ritable station de traitement de l\u2019eau, comme r\u00e9agir \u00e0 des changements dans la clart\u00e9 de l\u2019eau de la rivi\u00e8re, \u00e0 des \u00e9v\u00e9nements m\u00e9t\u00e9orologiques perturbateurs ou m\u00eame \u00e0 des d\u00e9faillances des syst\u00e8mes de pompage et \u00e0 l\u2019encrassement des membranes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00ab Ce projet ne vise pas \u00e0 remplacer les humains \u00bb<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab On dit souvent que l\u2019IA a la mauvaise r\u00e9putation de supprimer des emplois, mais ce projet ne vise pas \u00e0 remplacer les gens. Il est possible de reproduire la minicentrale de Drayton Valley, ainsi que son syst\u00e8me de contr\u00f4le bas\u00e9 sur l\u2019apprentissage par renforcement dans d\u2019autres communaut\u00e9s \u00e9loign\u00e9es confront\u00e9es \u00e0 des probl\u00e8mes de traitement de l\u2019eau qui entra\u00eenent des avis d\u2019\u00e9bullition. La construction de grandes usines sophistiqu\u00e9es de traitement de l\u2019eau n\u2019est pas toujours possible; rien ne garantit non plus qu\u2019on trouvera des op\u00e9rateurs qualifi\u00e9s pour les faire fonctionner. Si les syst\u00e8mes de filtration s\u2019encrassent ou si de l\u2019eau contamin\u00e9e p\u00e9n\u00e8tre dans la cha\u00eene de traitement, il n\u2019y aura peut-\u00eatre pas d\u2019op\u00e9rateur qualifi\u00e9 pour d\u00e9tecter ces probl\u00e8mes, ce qui peut entra\u00eener des centaines de milliers de dollars de frais de remplacement de filtres et avoir des cons\u00e9quences d\u00e9sastreuses pour les petites communaut\u00e9s \u00e0 budget limit\u00e9 \u00bb, d\u00e9clare White.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White travaille \u00e0 la fois au d\u00e9partement d\u2019informatique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de l\u2019Alberta et chez DeepMind Alberta. Selon lui, l\u2019apprentissage par renforcement (AR) est la forme d\u2019IA la plus proche de l\u2019intelligence naturelle, et le fait que l\u2019AR pourrait combler le foss\u00e9 entre les deux le motive. Il souligne aussi que l\u2019Amii et le CIFAR ont jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le essentiel dans l\u2019avancement du leadership du Canada en mati\u00e8re d\u2019IA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab Gr\u00e2ce au financement, au soutien et \u00e0 la collaboration du CIFAR au fil des ans, le Canada joue un r\u00f4le tr\u00e8s important dans le domaine de l\u2019IA et de l\u2019apprentissage automatique.
