Avec l\u2019explosion des grands mod\u00e8les de langage comme ChatGPT, il est plus facile que jamais d\u2019obtenir de l\u2019information rapidement ou de g\u00e9n\u00e9rer du contenu tel que des articles ou des images. Cette perc\u00e9e multiplie toutefois les possibilit\u00e9s, pour les personnes mal intentionn\u00e9es, de cr\u00e9er des contenus faux ou trompeurs qui sont \u00e0 la fois cr\u00e9dibles et de grande qualit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Reihaneh Rabbany<\/a>, titulaire d\u2019une chaire en IA Canada-CIFAR et professeure adjointe \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill, tire parti des grands mod\u00e8les de langage pour d\u00e9tecter la d\u00e9sinformation. En collaboration avec son cochercheur principal, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Godbout, elle s\u2019affaire actuellement \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une application utilisateur qui permet de v\u00e9rifier l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 de l\u2019information v\u00e9hicul\u00e9e en ligne. Cette application sera mise \u00e0 la disposition du public, la sortie du prototype \u00e9tant pr\u00e9vue pour mars 2025.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Notre mani\u00e8re d\u2019agir et de prendre des d\u00e9cisions en tant que soci\u00e9t\u00e9 est fortement influenc\u00e9e par l\u2019information que nous recevons, explique Reihaneh Rabbany. Pendant la COVID, par exemple, nous avons vu comment l\u2019information trouv\u00e9e en ligne incitait les gens \u00e0 prendre ou non des mesures comme se faire vacciner — ce qui, dans certains cas, pouvait \u00eatre une question de vie ou de mort. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Beaucoup de gens prennent l\u2019information publi\u00e9e en ligne pour de l\u2019argent comptant. En effet, un r\u00e9cent sondage IPSOS-UNESCO<\/a> r\u00e9v\u00e8le que 50 % des personnes interrog\u00e9es font confiance \u00e0 l\u2019information qu\u2019elles trouvent sur les m\u00e9dias sociaux. Comme le souligne Mme Rabbany, les perceptions du public sont souvent fa\u00e7onn\u00e9es par ce qui circule en ligne. Cette situation rev\u00eat une importance particuli\u00e8re dans le contexte politique, poursuit-elle, parce que l\u2019opinion publique dicte souvent les d\u00e9cisions des \u00e9lus et le fonctionnement de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Le projet vise \u00e0 doter les gens d\u2019outils leur permettant d\u2019obtenir de l\u2019information de meilleure qualit\u00e9 et de prendre des d\u00e9cisions plus \u00e9clair\u00e9es. L\u2019application sera \u00e9quip\u00e9e d\u2019une fonction de recherche destin\u00e9e aux personnes utilisatrices et permettra au grand mod\u00e8le de langage d\u2019acc\u00e9der au Web ouvert afin d\u2019extraire des documents ou des sources d\u2019information. Bien qu\u2019en principe l\u2019application puisse analyser des donn\u00e9es de toutes sortes, le prototype sera entra\u00een\u00e9 et \u00e9valu\u00e9 dans le contexte des \u00e9v\u00e9nements politiques et des \u00e9lections \u00e0 venir au Canada au cours des deux prochaines ann\u00e9es. <\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 tout, les travaux savants r\u00e9alis\u00e9s dans le cadre du projet sont tout \u00e0 fait transposables \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle mondiale, pr\u00e9cise Reihaneh Rabbany. Avec son \u00e9quipe, elle esp\u00e8re d\u00e9velopper des collaborations \u00e0 long terme avec d\u2019autres pays, en particulier les \u00c9tats-Unis, afin d\u2019\u00e9largir l\u2019utilisation et la port\u00e9e de l\u2019application.<\/p>\n

La premi\u00e8re collaboration de Reihaneh Rabbany et de Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Godbout sur cet enjeu remonte au projet intitul\u00e9 \u00ab L\u2019intelligence politique \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e8re de la d\u00e9sinformation<\/a> \u00bb, financ\u00e9 en 2020 par une subvention Catalyseur en IA du CIFAR. Reihaneh Rabbany souligne l\u2019importance du financement accord\u00e9 par le CIFAR dans la gen\u00e8se de ce projet :<\/p>\n

\u00ab La subvention Catalyseur a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ment d\u00e9clencheur qui nous a permis de r\u00e9unir une \u00e9quipe et de financer les deux premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de notre collaboration. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ce coup de pouce, nous avons pu obtenir davantage de financement, agrandir l\u2019\u00e9quipe et mener le projet encore plus loin. \u00bb<\/p>\n
