The Royal Society of Canada named four CIFAR researchers among its most recently elected Fellows of the Society, and Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
CIFAR Advisory Committee Chair David Cory, Senior Fellow and Program Co-Director Michèle Lamont, and Senior Fellow Brendan Frey were elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of their outstanding scholarly and scientific achievements. Senior Fellow Matt Dobbs was elected to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, which represents the emerging generation of scholarly, scientific, and artistic leadership in Canada.
David Cory (Institute for Quantum Computing) is a pioneer in experimental quantum computing who has had a strong influence on the application of quantum sensors in medicine, resource exploration and material science. Cory has served on the Advisory Committee for the CIFAR Quantum Information Science program since 2004.
Michèle Lamont (Harvard University) is a cultural sociologist who studies inequality, race and ethnicity, evaluation of worth, and neoliberalism. She has received numerous awards for her books and research mentoring and was elected president-elect of the American Sociological Association in 2015. Lamont has co-directed the CIFAR Successful Societies program since 2003.
Brendan Frey (University of Toronto) has significantly contributed to a new understanding of how gene variance and expression affects disease through his application of machine learning algorithms to genomics. Frey was appointed to the CIFAR Genetic Networks and Neural Computation & Adaptive Perception programs in 2006.
Matt Dobbs (McGill University) studies the origin, history, and fate of the universe through the development of new instruments and experiments to better understand the early universe. Dobbs joined the CIFAR Cosmology & Gravity program in 2008.
