CIFAR welcomes Canada’s new Chief Science Advisor

CIFAR congratulates Canada’s new Chief Science Advisor, Dr. Mona Nemer, and the Government of Canada on this important step towards strengthening Canadian science and research.

“Congratulations Dr. Nemer on being named Chief Science Advisor. You have all our support in this critical position,” said CIFAR President & CEO Dr. Alan Bernstein. “This is exciting news for the Canadian science community and indeed the global research community.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Science Minister Kirsty Duncan announced Dr. Nemer’s appointment on Sept. 26. Dr. Nemer will provide scientific advice to government, and help ensure government science is publically accessible and that federal scientists can speak freely about their research. She will also submit an annual report on the state of federal government science to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Science.

Dr. Nemer is a distinguished medical researcher whose focus has been on the heart, particularly on the mechanisms of heart failure and congenital heart diseases. In addition to publishing over 200 scholarly articles, her research has led to new diagnostic tests for heart failure and the genetics of cardiac birth defects. Dr. Nemer has spent more than 10 years as the Vice-President, Research at the University of Ottawa, has served on many national and international scientific advisory boards, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Member of the Order of Canada, and a Chevalier de l’Ordre du Québec.
