Members of CIFAR community to advise Canada on AI

A new advisory council including several CIFAR leaders will advise government on how to build on Canada’s strength in artificial intelligence in a way that reflects Canadian values

The Government of Canada has announced the membership of its new Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence. Members of the council will be asked to make recommendations to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development on “building Canada’s strengths and global leadership in AI, identifying opportunities to create economic growth that benefits all Canadians, and ensuring that AI advancements reflect Canadian’ values.”

Several members of CIFAR’s community are on the council, including:

  • Dr. Elissa Strome, AVP Research and Executive Director of the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, CIFAR

  • Yoshua Bengio, Canada CIFAR AI Chair and co-director of the CIFAR Learning in Machines & Brains program; Scientific Director, Mila; Canada Research Chair in Statistical Learning Algorithms and Professor, Université de Montréal

  • Geoffrey Hinton, CIFAR Distinguished Fellow, advisor to the CIFAR Learning in Machines & Brains program; Chief Scientific Advisor, Vector Institute; Vice President and Engineering Fellow, Google

  • Richard Sutton, fellow in the CIFAR Learning in Machines & Brains program; Chief Scientific Advisor, Amii; Distinguished Research Scientist, DeepMind

  • Ian Kerr, Chair of CIFAR AI & Society Council; Professor and Canada Research Chair Ethics, Law & Tech, University of Ottawa
