Appointed Canada CIFAR AI Chair – 2024

Geoffrey Rockwell studies video games, textual visualization, text analysis, ethics of technology and the ethics of artificial intelligence.

He recently co-edited a book, Right Research: Modelling Sustainable Research Practices in the Anthropocene (Open Book Publishers, 2021) that looks at research practices. He co-authored a book Hermeneutica: Computer-Assisted Interpretation in the Humanities (MIT Press, 2016) that looks at how computers can be used to study electronic texts.

Rockwell is the co-developer with Stéfan Sinclair of Voyant Tools (voyant-tools.org), an award-winning suite of text analysis and visualization tools that complements Hermeneutica. He is now working on a book on dialogue and artificial intelligence that looks at the conversations we have about AI and the conversations we can have with the new chatbots like ChatGPT.
