Dr. Alan Bernstein named U of T Professor Emeritus
The title reflects Bernstein’s past and continued substantive contributions to the University of Toronto community
The University of Toronto has named Dr. Alan Bernstein, President and CEO of CIFAR, a Professor Emeritus, effective Nov. 1, 2022. The honorific title is given to retired faculty members to reflect their significant contributions to the University community.
“My association with the University of Toronto began as an undergraduate in mathematics, physics and chemistry, continued as a graduate student in medical biophysics and continued as an Adjunct Professor when I returned from my postdoc training in the U.K.,” said Bernstein. “As a professor at U of T, I had the very good fortune to have many great colleagues and collaborators and graduate students train with me. I am very proud of the students who trained with me who have gone on to have great careers in academia, industry and research administration.
“U of T has truly been my intellectual home for my entire scientific career and so I am very honoured to be named a Professor Emeritus at this great university,” added Bernstein.
In 2019, the university also recognized Bernstein with an Honourary Doctorate for “his leadership of major Canadian and international research institutions” and his promotion of collaborative research that has “enriched the field of medicine.”
“I wish to extend the warmest congratulations to Professor Emeritus Alan Bernstein on this richly deserved appointment,” said Leah Cowen, program co-director of CIFAR’s Fungal Kingdom: Threats & Opportunities program, and vice-president, research, innovation and strategic initiatives at UofT.
“It is an outstanding recognition of his remarkable career as a scientist, teacher and leader, and of his deep and sustained engagement with the University of Toronto,” she added. “Alan has had a transformative impact on research and innovation in Canada and around the world.”
