CIFAR is proud to announce that it has been granted viceregal patronage by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.
The announcement comes on the heels of CIFAR’s 40th anniversary, during which the organization celebrated four decades of excellence for its contributions to science and research, both in Canada and around the world.
Viceregal patronage is a time-honoured practice that builds relationships between the Governor General and organizations that demonstrate “exceptional contributions to Canadian society.” The honour simultaneously enhances CIFAR’s impact and furthers the Governor General’s mandate, which centres strongly on reconciliation efforts and priority areas, including youth and education, climate change and environmental protections, and mental health and wellness.
CIFAR was previously granted viceregal patronage by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada from 2014 to 2017, and by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada from 2018 to 2021.
“CIFAR is honoured to receive viceregal patronage from Her Excellency,” said Stephen Toope, President and CEO of CIFAR and member of the Order of Canada. “This patronage underscores the importance of the work being undertaken by CIFAR to build inclusive and vibrant research ecosystems in Canada and around the world. CIFAR’s work to convene brilliant people to tackle the biggest questions facing science and humanity will support Her Excellency in her ongoing work to grow reconciliation and build a strong future for Canadians.”
