CIFAR is pleased to announce that the Alberta government will provide $2.1M in funding to CIFAR over three years to increase global research collaboration and the development of home-grown talent. In support of Alberta’s Technology and Innovation Strategy, the funding will help to strengthen Alberta’s talent and innovation capacity.
This will be accomplished, in part, by bringing the world’s top researchers and industry leaders to Alberta for CIFAR meetings and events around leading-edge topics in science and technology including AI, hydrogen exploration and quantum information science, thereby growing the province’s visibility on the international stage and highlighting Alberta’s strong technology sector.
CIFAR’s Frontiers of Science Symposia will provide an additional opportunity for early-career researchers from Alberta to join international and interdisciplinary groups of researchers, enabling them to expand their networks and opening them up to funding opportunities on collaborative projects. Alberta will also host one of CIFAR’s Symposia, bringing international, early-career researchers directly to the province.
The partnership also aims to increase national and global collaboration with Alberta researchers and the broader technology and innovation sector by convening institutions, industry and potential investors to connect with Alberta’s technology and innovation ecosystem. This will include opportunities for Alberta-based researchers to attend CIFAR’s international events and engage in dialogue with innovators globally. Doing so will expand Alberta’s global audience, fast-tracking Alberta’s potential to develop breakthrough technologies to help drive key industries in the province.
“Cultivating a strong talent pool and fostering collaboration is critical to strengthening the research ecosystem in Canada and worldwide,” said Stephen Toope, President & CEO of CIFAR. “The Government of Alberta’s commitment to building these vital areas will be instrumental to strengthening their position as a strong hub for innovation. CIFAR thanks the government for their ongoing investment and looks forward to advancing these mutual interests.”
