The transition in Chair and other appointments come as CIFAR embarks on a new Strategy.

CIFAR today announced the appointment of Irfhan Rawji as the Chair of its Board of Directors, succeeding William (Bill) Young, who has presided as Chair since 2020.

Rawji, a distinguished leader in venture capital and social finance, brings extensive expertise to the role. He is a Managing Partner at both Relay Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm, and Realize Capital Partners, a social finance asset manager with a $135 million anchor commitment from the Government of Canada. Rawji also founded MobSquad, a startup dedicated to bringing world-class technology talent to Canada. Rawji joined CIFAR’s Board of Directors in 2021.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to take on this role during such a pivotal time for the organization,” said Rawji. “CIFAR’s new Strategy sets an exciting course for addressing global challenges and driving impact in Canada and around the world. I look forward to working with the Board and leadership to drive this bold vision forward to ensure we achieve our pinnacle aspiration.”

“Irfhan brings deep experience in leadership and an unwavering commitment to innovation. We are thrilled to have his insights and expertise at the helm during an exciting time of renewal for CIFAR,” said Stephen Toope, President & CEO of CIFAR, who also extended heartfelt thanks to outgoing Chair Bill Young.

“Bill has been a steadfast leader during his time as Chair, helping to strengthen CIFAR’s mission and global impact. His contributions since joining in 2014 have been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for his service. I am delighted that he will remain a member of our Board.”

Alongside Rawji’s appointment, CIFAR also announced other board changes: Damon Williams has been appointed Chair of the Investment Committee, and Jason McLean has been appointed Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. Gilles Ouellette will join the Directors Emeriti.
