CIFAR is delighted to announce the African Women in Research Symposium, taking place in January 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. This initiative will support Africa’s next generation of research leaders in developing meaningful, high-impact careers through ongoing skills training, research support, and global networking opportunities. Participants will be from African research institutes, with 70% or more identifying as women. Co-developed with African institutions and the Foundation, this unique symposium will engage participants in identifying obstacles and sharing solutions to help strengthen their leadership skills and research capacity. Hundreds of applicants have enthusiastically responded. By empowering young Africans, this initiative aims to create a robust pipeline for the next generation of African research leaders who will be well-positioned to build the capacity of local academic institutions as their careers progress.

Africa has the youngest and fastest-growing population in the world, making young Africans the future of global research. By building capacity for individuals and partner institutions, this project reinforces our shared goals of strengthening the careers of next-generation leaders, the institutions they are a part of, and building new pathways for women in science.

CIFAR is thrilled to engage with the Mastercard Foundation as a champion of these efforts!
