A request for proposals is now open for groundbreaking AI safety research projects through The Alignment Project, launched by the UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI). This initiative offers a critical opportunity for researchers to contribute essential research to securing advanced AI systems, ensuring they remain safe, secure, and beneficial to society.
The Alignment Project, an international, cross-sector coalition, is dedicated to advancing the critical field of AI alignment. This research area is focused on ensuring that advanced AI systems are developed in a way that is consistent with human interests and values.
Researchers are invited to apply for funding of up to £1 million per project. This is part of a global fund totaling over £15 million, dedicated to accelerating progress in AI alignment research. The Canadian AI Safety Institute (CAISI), through CIFAR, is contributing up to $1 million specifically to support cutting-edge Canadian research in this vital area.
In addition, the fund will provide:
The call for projects is open until September 10. AISI is offering a webinar on August 11, 2025. To learn more and to apply, visit AISI’s website.
This collaborative effort is led by the UK’s AI Security Institute and supported by an international coalition including the Canadian AI Safety Institute, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), Schmidt Sciences, Amazon Web Services, Anthropic, Halcyon Futures, the Safe AI Fund, UK Research and Innovation, and the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA).
The Canadian AI Safety Institute (CAISI) Research Program at CIFAR is independently leading Canadian, multidisciplinary research to tackle the safety challenges posed by advanced AI systems. As a core component of the government’s broader Canadian AI Safety Institute, the program leverages Canada’s robust AI research ecosystem to advance critical knowledge.
We encourage all interested researchers to learn more and apply now to contribute to this essential field. Your expertise is crucial in unlocking the benefits of advanced AI while safeguarding society.
