How can AI systems become better at planning, reasoning, making decisions, and adapting to their digital environments?

Dhanya Sridhar and Marc Bellemare share perspectives from the fields of causality and reinforcement learning as we look to the future of building smarter AI agents.

This event is free and open to the public.

Dhanya Sridhar is a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Mila and an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at the University of Montreal. Sridhar develops theory and machine learning methods to study causal questions. Causal questions are about interventions to the world: how would patients respond if they were given a new therapeutic? What is the effect of a new content moderation policy on social media posts?

Marc G. Bellemare is a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at Mila, a CIFAR associate fellow of the Learning in Machines & Brains program, an adjunct professor at the School of Computer Science at McGill University, and a research scientist at Google Brain in Montréal. His long-term goal is the design of generally competent agents: agents that can successfully operate in a wide range of environments and eventually exhibit the gamut of behaviour that we attribute to humans: curiosity, boredom, competence, and emergent communication.
