Recent highlights from climate-focused initiatives driven by work at the three institutes include:
Amii partners with New Harvest to use AI and ML in cellular agriculture
Amii recently announced a partnership with New Harvest, a nonprofit research institute that works to advance the production of animal products such as meat from cell cultures rather than from animal husbandry. The research collaboration will focus on applications of AI and machine learning for cellular agriculture, which has the potential to have a massive impact on global sustainable development areas including climate action, hunger, clean water and sanitation. The research findings will be made open and accessible for all, helping to advance the field for wider global impact. Stay tuned for details of the first phase of the project, to be discussed at Amii’s Upper Bound event in May.
AI and Cities: Mila and UN-Habitat White Paper
In October 2022 Mila and UN-Habitat, the United Nations organization working for sustainable urbanization in over 90 countries, launched a collaborative white paper offering insights and recommendations on how AI systems can be harnessed to support the development of socially and environmentally sustainable cities and human settlements. The document includes contributions from Golnoosh Farnadi and David Rolnick, both Canada CIFAR AI Chairs at Mila. It also features Catherine Régis, a Mila researcher who is a Professor of Law at Université de Montréal and co-chair of the Global Partnership on AI’s Responsible AI Working Group. The report covers urban applications of AI across a wide range of sectors including energy, mobility, public safety and healthcare.
The Vector Institute works with TELUS to reduce the energy footprint of data-driven industries
A collaboration announced last year between the Vector Institute and TELUS is successfully creating open source AI solutions to help large organizations reduce energy consumption. TELUS is currently working with the Telemanagement Forum (a consortium of global telecommunications providers, HVAC and Building Management Systems vendors) to trial this solution in other sites, and to build a standard for AI-Controlled HVAC. This will facilitate energy savings globally, and in any industry with small data operations such as retail, banking and schools.
