CIFAR welcomes the Government of Canada’s renewed National AI Strategy and its continued support for the Canada CIFAR AI Chairs program, including the plan to scale this elite cohort to nearly 200. Today’s announcement is a powerful affirmation that world-class research and talent remain the primary engine of Canada’s technological future.

As a core partner of the Canadian AI Strategy since 2017, CIFAR has helped build the foundation of Canada’s global leadership in AI. By appointing over 140 Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, a group that ranks third globally for AI research impact, and by serving as the national hub that aligns the strengths of Amii, Mila, and the Vector Institute, CIFAR has played a central role in building and connecting a collaborative AI ecosystem that drives innovation. Through initiatives like the Canadian AI Safety Institute Research Program at CIFAR, we also mobilize leading expertise to advance responsible AI solutions.

With Canada ranking fifth globally in highly-cited publications, these Chairs remain the cornerstone of our national edge. Sustained, long-term investment is essential to attract and retain the world’s best minds and to ensure Canadian ideas drive our collective prosperity.

We look forward to working with the Government and our partners to scale this ecosystem and keep Canada at the forefront of beneficial AI.

Stephen J. Toope, O.C., LL.D. President & CEO, CIFAR
