PARTNERS

New ideas are the feedstocks of innovation.

Our partnerships are designed around mutual strategic objectives, and often result in joint events, and co-created research and public policy engagements. Recent examples include:

Connecting international research communities

In order to facilitate international collaboration and the exchange of ideas between the world's foremost AI researchers, our Learning in Machines & Brains program signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Lab for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) in December 2019. Exchanges of graduate students and joint meetings will strengthen existing ties.

The research goals of CIFAR's Quantum Materials program are closely aligned with those of the Center for Computational Quantum Physics at the Flatiron Institute. Through a partnership that includes joint workshops and reciprocal meeting invitations, we bring the world's top materials scientists together to advance knowledge in quantum physics.

Addressing societal challenges

In November 2019, we held a two-day capstone conference for our Successful Societies program with Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Discussions focused on how understanding inequality in all of its many forms can lead to better policy.

Building solution networks

With the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), we developed a new model for joint innovation. Our Solution Networks support the development of AI governance solutions in low-middle income countries.

Stimulating global policy conversations

Through partnerships with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), we led global policy conversations and bridged the divide between powerful AI technologies and the policies that will ensure their responsible use.

In a joint event with Innovation, Science & Economic Development Canada and the U.S. State Department, we examined public policy for AI strategies. Discussion centred on cross-border economic growth and risk management.
